We caught up with Deck Officer Cadet Hannah Doyle, after she spent four months onboard the MSC Cruises MSC Splendida during Phase 2 of her cadetship.
“I assisted the 3rd Officer and Chief Officer on navigational watches, building upon the knowledge I had learned in college.
My tasks included filling out the logbook and preparing all the appropriate information for the arrival into port, as well as radio communication with the VTS.
During the arrival, I would help with communications from mooring deck to the bridge – it was great to see the manoeuvre from a different point of view.
I also spent a lot of time with the Safety Officer on board, helping to ensure the ship was safe to navigate, testing all alarm systems and GDMSS equipment. I also assisted with the maintenance of the lifeboats.
Overall, my experience was absolutely brilliant and really enhanced my knowledge. I can’t wait to go back to sea!”
