Pembrokeshire College students were recently successful in securing sought after Cadetships with Chiltern Maritime Academy. Part of the Viking Maritime Group, Chiltern Maritime, has remained one of the UK’s leading providers of the Merchant Navy offering cadetships for over 30 years. They are the only provider to offer cadets with multi-ship and extensive sea experience whilst completing a formal qualification.
Following a recent visit during which Chiltern talked to students about the careers and opportunities available to them, Senior Officer Trainee Coordinator, Stuart Benge and Director of Maritime Training, Captain Nigel Hope returned to the College to interview learners who had to prove academic excellence alongside practical skills within Mechanical or Marine Engineering.
Students performed exceptionally well during the two-day interview and skills process, securing nine conditional offers with Chiltern.
Engineering student, Thomas Jones was offered a place with MSC Cruises at Glasgow College while Jack Roberts, Kian Okelland John Mansbridge were offered a joint partnership cadetship with Teekay Gas and Trinity House.
Meanwhile, Kyle Davies, Hywel Jackson, and Aled Love were offered Trinity House sponsored cadetships studying a Foundation Degree at Warsash Maritime Academy. After receiving his offer Kyle commented: ‘I have been studying Engineering at Pembrokeshire College for three years and I am now going to progress into higher education and get a job in an exciting industry, something I did not believe was possible when leaving school. I am happy that my hard work has paid off – exactly what my lecturers said would happen if I stuck at it. Their belief in me is why I have been given this amazing opportunity.’
Finally, Ruben Adams and Cameron Davies were offered deck cadetships at Warsash Maritime Academy.
William Bateman: Section Lead in Engineering and Construction was delighted with the success of his learners: ‘The opportunities given by Chiltern Maritime Academy is testimony to the calibre of learners we have on our Level 3 Engineering and Marine programmes. Learners who have positive progressions into industry are plentiful, Chiltern has now given us more to talk about when inspiring future learners. Since the excellent news received on training contracts, there has been a general excitement from learners and lecturers. The relationship between Pembrokeshire College and Chiltern Maritime Academy will continue into 2020 and beyond – an exciting time to study Engineering & Marine disciplines.’
Training within these Cadetships consists of alternative college and sea phases lasting approximately three years. Students have the option to choose their pathway according to the types of vessels they wish to work on from Super Yachts, Containers, Oil/Gas/LNG Tankers, Cruise Ships, Ferries and many more. Chiltern offer the added bonus of paying learners whilst studying with the added opportunity of overseas travel.
