Döhle Yachts co-sponsored yacht cadet programme is now into its second year.. - 14/03/2019

In 2017, Döhle Yachts became the first yacht management company to support cadets enrolled at the prestigious Warsash Maritime Academy.  Alongside Trinity House Maritime Charity, the programme aims to offer support, structure and opportunities for young people at the beginning of their careers.

Officer cadet training is ideal for those who may have no previous experience of working at sea and who wish to become officers on board superyachts, or within the wider maritime industry.

Two of our sponsored cadets, Caleb Boyden and Max Taylor-Nobbs, have spoken about their experiences.

Caleb: “I am enjoying learning the different aspects of the superyacht industry. The courses have been great fun and have broadened my knowledge and I feel they will allow me greater opportunities for a career upon completion of my training. My first placement was on a round-the-world cruise for four months. I travelled up to the Arctic Circle and down to Australia, visiting twenty-six countries. The work was hard, with long hours, but the adventure, travel and camaraderie made it worthwhile.”

Max: “From as young as I can remember I have always had a wish to have a career at sea, which was the reason for applying for an officer cadetship at Warsash Maritime Academy. I was thrilled to have been selected for a hybrid cadetship with Döhle Yachts, with my very first sea phase as a Döhle-sponsored cadet being on board one of the world’s largest and most high-profile mega yachts. I joined the vessel in the Caribbean and spent the next four months carrying out a variety of duties; from wash downs and tender operations to watch duties. I was also extremely fortunate to complete a transatlantic crossing, finishing off in the Mediterranean. My time on board gave me a great insight into the life and responsibilities of an officer and further reinforced my desire to progress within the industry.”

As well as providing sponsorship and support, Döhle Yachts and Warsash Maritime Academy host an annual seminar for the cadets to discuss the superyacht industry with representatives from flag states and class societies in a structured yet informal setting. Details of the cadetship programme can be found on the Warsash website here.
