My cadetship so far has been so enjoyable, it’s amazing to work with a crew that understand the position you’re in and are willing to help you learn and progress. There has been struggles in this time that people don’t warn you about but the support the training officers / crew have give me has been so helpful and got me through those tough times.
In my position as a Deck Cadet everyday is different. One day you could be chipping and painting and the next navigating through oil fields. My favourite part of the job is being out at sea and experiencing amazing sunrises and sunsets. I also love meeting new people and listening to stories about their culture and experiences.
I have been fortunate enough to take part in two tandem tows of jackup rigs, you don’t realise the size of those things and how technical everything can be until you are stood looking up at it. We have done a lot of Anchor Handling and I was able to assist the AB’s out on deck and get involved in all the hard work it takes to deploy a system.
We are currently taking part in heading control of an FPSO alongside 4 other Maersk Supply Service vessels. It is so fascinating watching us all working together from the bridge and the teamwork that goes into the job.
Working Offshore is truly amazing and the places and experiences I have been able to have are unbelievable! If I could give anyone some advice it would be that the sea is like an oyster, shine like the pearl inside. That was told to me by a fellow female seafarer when I first joined and it will stick with me for life.
